Trust volunteers receive award
Lunenburg - On Thursday, 22 April 2004, the 31st annual Lunenburg Volunteer Awards night took place at the fire hall. Accolades were handed out to 22 individuals for the time and talents they have unselfishly offered as volunteers to the Lunenburg community. Nominated by their respective organizations, each recipient of an award received a framed commendation and a pin in recognition of their achievements.
Mayor Laurence Mawhinney made a special presentation on behalf of the
town to Senator Wilfred Moore, chairman of the Bluenose II Preservation
Trust.
The mayor said the award recognizes the contribution of the team of volunteers
associated with the Trust, who for the past ten years have worked “to
preserve the schooner, and ensure that the legacy of traditional seamanship
skills and the craft of building great wooden ships are maintained for
future generations of Nova Scotians.”
“We are indeed proud of the achievements that have been obtained through the efforts of the volunteers who make up the Trust,” he said.
Also participating in the presentation on behalf of the Trust were board member Delbé Comeau of Meteghan River, current Bluenose II skipper Captain Philip Watson, former captains Wayne Walters and Orval Banfield, and both the crew of the vessel and her onshore support staff.
