The Lunenburg Connection
Lunenburg
is steeped in history and character. It was founded
in 1753. The first citizens of Lunenburg were "foreign
protestants" brought
over by the new British rulers of Nova Scotia from what is now Germany,
Switzerland and Montbeliard, France. Over time, they developed a vibrant
economy based on fishing, lumber, boat building and trade.
The affluence of Lunenburg's heyday is reflected in the Old Town's unique and colourful architecture. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it welcomes visitors from all over the world.

The Dory Shop, on the Lunenburg waterfront, builds dories - those sturdy rowboats (sometimes sailed) that were stacked on the decks of fishing schooners such as Bluenose. Out at sea on the fishing banks, the dories would be lowered into the water and the fishermen would spread out, two men in each dory, to catch fish and bring them back to the schooner. The Dory Shop has been building dories, and now wooden schooners, since 1917. It has a very informative website.
